I barely talk about my day job around here, but I’d like to make an exception to present you the work of Johan Vandenbussche.

If you happen to have visited my LinkedIn profile you know by now that I work for Vanden Broele Publishers. Next to the publishing house the Vanden Broele Group is also active in print & digital media, advertising & pr and IT solutions.

Almost three years ago to this date our CEO’s wife Sarah Verhaeghe passed away after a tragic kitesurf accident. I didn’t work for the company at that time, but I do remember reading an article about it. It fed my interest since she was a (talented) photographer.

In the wake of her death an annual award was created by Tom Vanden Broele and Narafi to recognize the work of young photography professionals . Narafi is a Brussels-based college that offers a Bachelor education in the photography and video field. The Sarah Verhaeghe award is awarded at the end of each academic year to one of the graduates.

This year’s laureate was Johan Vandenbussche who presented the series You Animal. He photographed 12 different animals in a studio shed. Afterwards he processed every image in Photoshop. The photoshopping is minimal, yet the viewer feels that something is odd about what they’re perceiving.

From the moment I saw (part of) the series, I was a huge fan. I won’t deny the fact that, as an animal-lover, I’m a bit biased here. But above all, I’m quite excited for 2014, as these images will grace the 2014 Vanden Broele calendar. I guess it won’t come as a surprise when I tell you I look forward to ring in 2014?
